A Message from the Chairman

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Meharry is committed to very high standards of training, research, and clinical services.

While the clinical services are aimed at the total population the faculty and staff recognize and respond to the special needs of the disadvantaged and minority populations.

Our research activities are gaining momentum and a central point of these is the elimination of mental health disparities.

In addition, the department provides training and clinical experiences for mental health workers other than psychiatrists in order to gain licensure or obtain advanced degrees.

Objectives

The objective of the Department of Psychiatry is to meet the needs of under served and disadvantaged populations for mental health and psychiatric services. The main strategies for achieving this objective are

1. Provide mental health services to patients
   
   
2. Train health professionals to render services in an empathetic manner and
   
   
3. Conduct research that addresses the amelioration of personal and psychiatric problems that affect mental health and psychiatric services. In pursuing these objectives, a cooperative relationship with the community shall be maintained and fostered.
