Meharry Medical College’s Dr. A. Cherrie Epps Will Receive The Harold Delany Educational Achievement Award From The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education

(Nashville, Tenn.) – The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) will present the Harold Delany Educational Achievement Award to Dr. A. Cherrie Epps, senior advisor to the president and dean emeritus of Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine for her significant contributions to medical education. The award will be given at the AABHE conference in Houston, TX at the Omni Hotel on Friday, April 4, 2008. Dr. Epps will be honored along with world renowned historian, Dr. John Hope Franklin, who will receive the AABHE Lifetime Achievement Award.

Meharry Medical College Researcher and Team Find Promise for Reducing Preterm-Births
Research study shows that inhibiting the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase reduces risk of pre-term labor in rats.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Scientific Director of the Meharry Center for Women’s Health Research and a team of researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch have concluded that inhibiting the activity of the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) during pregnancy can reduce the incidence of pre-term births in rats.  It also appears to stop the cervix from expanding and stretching.  Findings were reported in a recent issue of the specialized journal Reproduction.

New Child Passenger Safety Program Teaches Life-Saving Measures in Nashville

Nashville, Tenn. (January 24, 2008) — Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, launched See Me Safe, a new Child Passenger Safety (CPS) program today at the Meharry Child Passenger Safety Center. Developed in partnership with Meharry Medical College, See Me Safe connects parents and caregivers to CPS-certified technicians and provides them with hands-on training and a visual reference of the child properly restrained. It also recognizes the important role that health care providers play in stressing the need for precautionary, life-saving measures in motor vehicles and connecting parents with local, relevant resources. Ford Motor Company Fund awarded a $250,000 grant to Meharry Medical College for the development of this new pilot program. 


Meharry Medical College Scientific Director Leads Research Team To Develop A Gene Replacement Therapy For Premature Ovarian Failure

Research study shows Adenovirus expressing human FSH receptor corrects the Finnish C566T mutation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Scientific Director of the Meharry Center for Women’s Health Research and a team of researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Saskatchewan have recently discovered that the gene mutation believed to be a possible cause of premature ovarian failure may be corrected when an adenovirus compensating for the mutated gene is introduced.  Findings were reported in the recent issue of Molecular Human Reproduction.


Habitat Partner Family Meharry’s Very Own Katherine Smith

                                                                                   

Katherine Smith learned about Habitat for Humanity from a friend and current Habitat homeowner before, but she didn’t believe that she could do it.  When she learned about the program Meharry Medical College initiated for one of their employees, she decided to just “go for it” and do everything she needed to do to try to qualify for the Habitat Homeownership Program.  She took a leap of faith, like so many other Habitat homeowners have made in the past. Now, she is so excited and grateful for what is happening in her life that she sometimes has to pinch herself to feel that it is real.

Dr. Bernard Turner, Associate Vice President for Corporate and Foundation Relations at Meharry Medical College and other Meharrians have returned from a 10-day medical missionary trip to Belize.  This is the sixth mission trip coordinated by The Temple Church who took 29 of members on the trip, including 10 Meharrians who are also members of the church.  The team set up medical clinics in six villages to provide medical services to more than 1,000 people.

Wal-Mart Foundation Announces $1 Million Grant To The Meharry Medical College Center For Women’s Health Research

Grant Will Further Research Addressing Health Disparities 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – November 13, 2007 – The Wal-Mart Foundation announced today a $1 million grant to the Meharry Medical College Center for Women’s Health Research, the nation’s only center dedicated to the study of health disparities among women of color. Over the next five years, the grant will help advance the Center’s work in addressing diseases that disproportionately impact women from ethnic minorities – particularly African American women.

New Formulas for Designating Medically Underserved Areas/Populations and Health Professional Shortage Areas: The First Revisions since the 1970s will Affect Many Federal Funding Programs

Nashville, TN - The Department of Health and Human Services is preparing to adopt new definitions of Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in 2008. The Secretary of Health and Human Services approved the proposed rule changes on March 26, 2007 and a notice of proposed rulemaking will appear in the Federal Register in fall 2007. Upon the completion of the 6-month comment and review period will result in modifications to the proposal; the final rule is scheduled for publication in early 2008.

- Nashville, Tenn. – While seat belts reduce by about 50 percent the risks of injuries and deaths in motor vehicle crashes, results from more than a dozen studies of seatbelt use disparities between Hispanics and non-Hispanics over the years have been strikingly inconsistent. In the December 2006 issue of Injury Prevention, a leading international peer reviewed journal for health professionals and others interested in all unintentional injuries, Meharry-State Farm Alliance researchers at Nashville’s Meharry Medical College reconciled the inconsistencies. In so doing, the authors, led by epidemiologists Nathaniel C. Briggs, M.D., opened a window of opportunity for promoting safe driving practices among the Hispanic immigrants arriving in the United States every year.


Meharry Researcher Wins $4 Million Grant to Study Toxins' Effects

01/17/2007 - Meharry Medical College researcher Dr. Darryl B. Hood received a $4 million dollar grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to study the effects of environmental toxin exposures that economically disadvantaged communities are exposed to at home and in the workplace.


Meharry, SEIU Employees Reach Agreement; Sign 5 Year Pact


01/16/2007 - Nashville, Tenn. – Ranking executives of Meharry Medical College and the leadership of Local 205 of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) signed a labor-management agreement today that was ratified last week by members of the College’s SEIU bargaining unit. The agreement is effective immediately and remains in force through 2011. Principal signatories were Wayne J. Riley, M.D., MBA president and chief executive of Meharry; Doug Collier, director of Tennessee operation for SEIU; and Gloria Jones, chief steward of Local 205’s Meharry chapter.


Meharry-State Farm Alliance Presents Coveted Seat Belt Award

12/04/2006 - MISSISSIPPI—The primary enforcement seat belt law that took effect in Mississippi, May 27, 2006, was the featured attraction at an evening of thanksgiving sponsored on November 1 by the Nashville-based Meharry-State Farm Alliance at the Downtown Marriott Hotel in Jackson. The praise for lives saved and injuries prevented on state highways was as smooth and uncomplicated and gracious as Division 1 gridiron power plays each Saturday afternoon in the fall. Nobody was thrown for a loss for words. Nobody fumbled.


$14 Million Grant Awarded for Cancer Study

11/28/2006 - NASHVILLE---The Meharry/Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Partnership has been awarded $14 million by the National Cancer Institute for research that seeks to reduce cancer mortality among African Americans and other minorities. The renewal grant will provide $10 million to Meharry Medical College and $4 million to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The announcement was made by the Meharry/Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Partnership and U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper.

Initiatives will include funding a bullying-prevention program in area middle schools and developing a youth-violence surveillance system, to better understand where crimes are occurring and who is committing them.
